👶 The Baby Fayre Ely – The Maltings
On Sunday 7 September, 11 am – 3 pm, The Baby Fayre brings together dozens of small, local businesses catering to expectant parents and families. Browse stalls selling baby essentials, handmade gifts and pregnancy services. Entry is free. Whether you’re expecting, have a newborn or just love supporting local makers, it’s an uplifting day out by the river.
🎡 Haddenham Steam Rally & Heavy Horse Show – Sutton Road, Haddenham
This beloved steam rally returns on Saturday 6 & Sunday 7 September, with gates from 9am each day. Expect over 800 vintage engines, classic cars, tractors and heavy horses, plus a nostalgic fairground and live music. Tickets are £15 adults, £12.50 concessions and £5 evening entry. Run entirely by volunteers raising funds for local causes.🎷 Special Kinda Madness – The Maltings
On Friday 5 September at 7.30pm this high energy tribute group bring the two‑tone ska spirit of The Specials and Madness to life. Expect two full sets packed with hits from both bands and a stage show that’ll have you dancing and singing along. Tickets are £24.75 – dig out your trilby and braces for a night of nutty nostalgia.
🍵 Learning Lates: Fizzick Night – Ely Cathedral
Experience medieval medicine like a monk on Friday 5 September at 6pm This interactive evening lets you diagnose ailments, test “wee” samples and make herbal infusion bags while enjoying a glass of fizz. It’s part of the cathedral’s fun Learning Lates series, with tickets £20. A quirky way to explore history and raise a toast to the new term.
😌 Health & Well Fair – Soham Pavilion, Soham
Discover new ways to stay active and healthy at Soham’s first wellbeing fair on Sunday 7 September, 11am – 3pm. This free event features taster sessions from local sports clubs, a free climbing wall and smoothie bikes, cost‑of‑living advice, free health checks and even bicycle servicing. Come along to meet community groups and take home tips, vouchers and inspiration.
🧶 Absolute Beginners Crochet Workshop – Haddenham Arts Centre
If you’ve always wanted to crochet, join this relaxed class on Sunday 7 September, 11am – 2pm. Friendly tutors show you how to hold the hook and yarn, work basic stitches and start your first project; all materials are provided. Ideal for absolute beginners, it’s a gentle way to pick up a new hobby alongside like‑minded crafters. £30 per person.

🧱 Family Lego Club – Ely Library
Let imaginations run wild at this monthly Lego club on Thursday 4 September, 3.45pm – 4:45pm. Families build together around different themes; bricks are provided and little builders can display their creations. It costs just £1 per child and must be booked at the library desk. A fun after‑school treat for youngsters (and adults who still love Lego!).
🖼️ Paint a Lakeside Sunrise – The Yard
On Tuesday 9 September, 7pm – 9pm, The Paint Club guides you through creating a serene lakeside sunrise. All materials are included and step‑by‑step tuition means no experience is required. Enjoy a drink from the bar and take home your canvas at the end. Space is limited, so booking is essential. Tickets are £33.
🎖️ u3a Talk: How the First World War Began – Ely Methodist Church
Historian Peter Lee explores the complex causes of the Great War in this illustrated talk on Thursday 4 September at 2.30pm. Discover diplomatic missteps, secret alliances and the chain of events that plunged Europe into conflict. Admission is £1. A fascinating hour for history buffs and curious minds.

🟡 East Cambridgeshire Families Go Gold for Childhood Cancer Awareness
Two local families are encouraging Ely and Soham businesses to 'Go Gold' this September to mark Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The campaign includes golden window displays and will culminate with Ely Cathedral's Octagon Tower being lit in gold on September 28th. The initiative aims to raise awareness of childhood cancer signs and promote vital research funding for better treatments and potential cures.🏪 New Independent Business Opens on Ely Market Street
A Little Something Ely celebrated its official opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Mayor Cllr Mike Banyard. The shop, run by local resident Stacia Greenaway, sells gifts, cards, and jewellery and represents the fulfilment of her long-held dream to open her own business. The opening was celebrated as a welcome addition to Ely's proud tradition of independent businesses that make the city special.
